Among the most important French investment in Greece in the recent period

On November 19th, 2024, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis attended the Ceremony for the laying of the first stone of the data centre campus that the French company “Data4” is about to build in Peania (Attika) along with several ministers, the Governor of Attika, the mayor of Peania, the CEO of Data4, Olivier Micheli, and the French Ambassador to Greece.

During the event, Ambassador Laurence Auer noted that the campus is the newest milestone in a richly diversified Greek-French relation, illustrating the significant progress of the Greek economy in the recent years, as well as its potential in advanced technologies. She added that the future Peania campus is the new site of a French company renowned for its dynamism, its interest in European markets, its quest for technological innovation and its attention to the environment.

Since its inception in 2006, Data4 has become a prominent actor in the European market of data centres, with 35 such units in France, Germany, Italy, Spain and Poland, but also with a recent and significant development in Greece.

The project in Peania provides for the building of two state of the art data centres – the first of them should be operational in 2027 – with a possible extension to a total of four data centres in the future. The total investment for the first two centres is assessed to reach 300 million euros, with the likely creation of about 500 skilled and qualified jobs. It is an outcome which has benefited from an effective cooperation with the Greek authorities, both national and local, as well as with the Greek high-voltage electric network.

The campus is one of the most important French investments in Greece, in a future-oriented sector. It highlights the dynamism of the tech industry both in France and Greece and represents a testimony of the economic attractiveness of Greece – as its growth perspectives rank among the best in the euro zone for 2024 and for the years to come. This investment also exemplifies the high level of the bilateral relations between our two countries, while the bilateral exchanges have risen by 40 % since 2020.

A diversified French team is working to support the companies that wish to discover the Greek market or to invest there: the Economic Service of the Embassy, the office of Business France in Athens, the French-Greek Trade and industry Chamber, the French Tech network as well as the network of French Foreign trade advisors.
